Call Before You Dig

Know What's Below and Call Before You Dig

If you’re digging in New Jersey and you need to know what’s underground, please review the following process to ensure a safe excavation experience. Everyone must take steps to protect underground utilities and avoid interruption of vital services, property damage, and possible injury.

New Jersey Law requires anyone digging to call at least three full business days (excluding weekends and holidays) prior to beginning work. This includes excavators as well as property and homeowners’ contractors. Contact New Jersey One Call at 811 or 800-272-1000 any time, day or night, and follow these steps:

Different color flags and paint markings indicate the presence of different underground utilities.

3. DIG WITH CARE

Hand dig within two feet of buried piping and facilities.

Be mindful that inclement weather may wash away the painted markings.

Don’t make assumptions about whether or not you should have your utility lines marked. Every digging job requires a call to 811 or 800-272-1000 – even small projects like planting trees and shrubs.
