The nymphs have hatched on the ailanthus tree. If these trees are growing in the municipal right of way, we will remove the trees and dispose of the debris. The stump is treated to prevent it from growing back. Unfortunately, these lantern flies are here to stay, like the stink bug but more of a nuisance. They will not kill healthy hardwood trees like the ash borer, but when they feed on plant parts they excrete a black honeydew substance that can become a mess if it gets on cars, patios, etc.
One course of action a resident can take if they find an issue on their private property is to work with a licensed tree company and make the best decision for their property. This could include removing the ailanthus trees, using an insecticide or just dealing with the insect population mechanically.
